Veteran Democrat Party politician Trairong Suwankhiri will soon replace Korbsak Sabhavasu as the deputy prime minister in charge of economic affairs, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday. Trairong will be appointed soon after Korbsak completes his unfinished important tasks, particularly setting up an income-insurance system for farmers, according to Abhisit.
"When the time is right, Korbsak will resign as deputy prime minister to become the prime minister's secretary-general. I will nominate his replacement before the meeting of the Democrat Party's executive board next week," said Abhisit, who is also the Democrat Party leader.
He said Korbsak had agreed to become the PM's secretary-general, replacing Niphon Promphan, another senior Democrat figure, who resigned from the position last week.
When asked who would become Korbsak's successor, the prime minister said it would be Trairong, whom he said was well qualified for the job of deputy premier in charge of economic affairs. Abhisit said he would seek approval from the party's executive board.
The prime minister did not spell out the timetable to complete the appointments of Korbsak and Trairong.
After days of speculation about Niphon's resignation, the premier merely disclosed early this week that his top aide had tendered his resignation on September 30. There were rumours that Niphon disagreed with Abhisit's choice of caretaker national police chief, General Patheep Tanprasert.
