Police suspect a militant group led by Usman Dorkhor was responsible for a bomb attack yesterday on a fresh market which injured 25 people.
A police source said investigators were looking for Mr Usman, also known as Jehkhoo Samarn, who they claim was seeking revenge against the authorities who recently rounded up several insurgents under his control in Muang district here.
The group was accused recently of killing five rangers and was also suspected of being involved in several bomb attacks in the past, the source said.
In yesterday's incident, a home-made bomb weighing between seven and 10 kilogrammes, planted inside a purple Honda Dream motorcycle with a Yala licence plate and parked at Phimolchai market in Yala municipality, went off at 7.30am.
Banpot Poonpien, deputy spokesman for the Internal Security Operations Command, said the bomb was detonated by a mobile phone as a SIM card was found at the scene.
Col Banpot said Yala police were told two men, aged between 30 and 35, were seen parking the motorcycle in front of a pork stall inside the market about 5am.
A trader alerted security authorities about the motorcycle as he felt the two men looked suspicious and they had left the motorcycle unattended for too long.
A military team inspected the motorcycle with a GT200 bomb scanner, but the device did not detect the bomb.
The bomb exploded about 15 minutes after the military team left the scene.
Of the 25 injured, three were military officers. Four of the injured, including Ubonthana Ruangthanorm, are in a critical condition.
It was the fifth time the market, located near Yala railway station, had been targeted in bomb attacks by suspected insurgents.
Somphit Ruangphung, a trader at the market, said she wanted the authorities to install surveillance cameras inside and around the market.
Security guards should also be employed to guard the area, she said.
