Diplomacy is the order of the day

Thailand will overlook Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen's remarks favouring Thaksin Shinawatra when the country hosts the Southeast Asian summit from today.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Vimon Kidchob said Hun Sen's offer of a place in Cambodia for ousted prime minister Thaksin to stay will not disrupt the atmosphere at the Asean summit hosted by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva.
Mr Abhisit's duty as the Asean chairman was to push for the grouping to become one community, she said.
"We are confident that we will push the meeting towards success for the future of the grouping," Ms Vimon said.
The Cambodian prime minister's remarks were made in a private meeting with Puea Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh on Wednesday.
Today he will be in the same room as Mr Abhisit and other Southeast Asian leaders when the summit begins.
But the Cambodian strongman is one of the four leaders who will miss the opening ceremony because he has to welcome South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to Phnom Penh.
Other leaders to arrive at the summit later today are Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Philippine President Gloria Arroyo who also have engagements in their own countries.
Today, representatives of nongovernmental organisations in Southeast Asia plan to meet with Asean leaders.
The meeting is expected to see some hiccups as Khin Omar, who represents Burma, was rejected by NGO leaders at the previous summit in February.
Initially, NGOs from Burma had chosen Shwe Shwe Sein Latt to represent civil society but that was contested by groups in exile who finally put forward Khin Omar as their choice.
