Rio de Janeiro will host the 2016 Olympic Games.
Rio beat off the challenges of Madrid,Tokyo and Chicago in a vote by International Olympic Committee delegates at the IOC session in Copenhagen yesterday.
The Brazilian city won after the third and final round of voting.
Chicago was eliminated in the first round, and Tokyo went out in the second.
It will be the first Olympics in South America. The 2016 Games will come barely two years after Brazil hosts the 2014 football World Cup.
Nearly 50,000 people erupted in celebration when Rio was announced host of the 2016 Olympics, jumping and cheering in a Carnival-like party on Copacabana beach.
