A former New Zealand government minister who used his cabinet position to help Thai nationals get permanent residence in return for free labour on houses he owned in Samoa and New Zealand has been jailed for six years.
Samoan-born Taito Phillip Field was jailed yesterday for bribery, corruption and perverting the course of justice.
Field was the first Pacific Island-born legislator in New Zealand when he was elected in 1993 but he also became the first member of parliament found guilty of bribery and corruption.
Justice Rodney Hansen sentenced Field to four years in jail on the bribery and corruption charges and two years for perverting the course of justice.
The 57-year-old was convicted of trying to obstruct an inquiry.
