Typhoon Parma has slowed while approaching the Philippines but continues to pack extremely dangerous winds and remains unpredictable, government weather forecasters said yesterday.
Parma, which was originally forecast to hit the northern Philippine provice of Aurora this morning, is now predicted to make landfall in the afternaoon, the forecasters said. The typhoon was orginally moving northwest at 19 kilometres per hour, but slowed to 13kph yesterday, the weather station said.
It ws still packing gusts of 230kph, it added. Government forecaster Prisco Nilo said the change in pace could mean Parma would not hit Aurora province on the Philippines' main island of Luzon as orginally forecast. It could move further to the north, away from Manila, which is still reeling from devastating floods last Saturday, or travel to the south and closer to the nation's capital Nilo said.
The Philippines declared a national state of calamity as typhoon Parma headed for Luzon, where recovery efforts continue six days after tropical storm Ketsana devastated Manila and its surrounding area, leaving 293 people dead.
