The government will revise next year's retraining programme for the unemployed, due to a recovery in both the economy and the labour market.
Deputy Prime Minister Korbsak Sabhavasu said the programme's original target for 2010 was to retrain 250,000 unemployed workers. That figure will now be reduced.
The government will also not accept new applications from the private sector seeking state aid to help prevent lay-offs, because the unemployment rate has fallen.
Kanok Wongtrangan, chairman of the subcommittee overseeing the government-sponsored Tonkla Archeep retraining programme, said 173,000 out of 550,000 applicants had already completed retraining.
Of the remaining applicants, 134,000 have found new jobs and so will not undergo retraining at this stage. However, 34,000 have confirmed their intention to participate.
However, Kanok said the government might reinstate the full retraining programme next year if the labour market worsens.
Federation of Thai Industries deputy secretary-general Amnart Nanthaharn said the private sector still wanted government help with retraining. New orders from abroad are on the rise, so they will need more workers to increase production.
